Stelson Shares Career Highlights at Open House
WGAL News 8 Anchor Janelle Stelson looked back at the various “forks in the road” that led to her successful 30-year journalism career at the Gannett Fleming Toastmasters Club Open House on Jan. 23.
Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, she landed her first job as a speechwriter at the Embassy of Egypt in Washington, D.C. She then began knocking on doors to break into TV news and joined WHTM-TV in Harrisburg as a general assignment reporter and weather anchor. After several years, she had the opportunity to move to WPLG-TV in Miami, then returned to Harrisburg as a news anchor at WHP-TV, followed by WITF. Janelle joined WGAL in 1997 and co-anchors News 8 each weeknight.
Approximately 40 attendees packed the room to hear Janelle’s stories of growing from a young reporter to the winner of a 2016 Mid-Atlantic Region Emmy. Her favorite interviews included the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, to whom she gave a note from Nancy Reagan, and legendary musician Paul McCartney.
Tremendous Open House10/12/2015by Dr. Dilip Abayasekara, DTM, Toastmasters International Past President and local speech coach and trainer
Today’s Open House at the Gannett Fleming Toastmasters Club was like getting a booster shot of enthusiasm and wisdom! Keynote speaker Tracey Jones, President of Tremendous Life Books was the keynote speaker, and boy, did she deliver! The three pronged message to about 50 attendees packing the room was to embrace experience, read like a leader, and find a cause. Tracey peppered her lively talk with memorable lines such as “Don’t build your brand, build your mission,” and “Leadership is about growmanship, not salesmanship.”
As someone who was influenced by her great father, the late Charlie “Tremendous” Jones, I could see that Tracey packs the same powerful punch to her speeches that her legendary father displayed. We were also privileged to hear an advanced manual speech by Toastmaster Bruce Lindsay who educated us about the “Halo Effect” and how to avoid its pitfalls. I gave the evaluation of his speech.
For a very well organized and fun event, hearty congratulations go to Gannet Fleming Toastmasters Club and organizers Jim Marshall and club president Deborah Michalski. Toastmasters is the world’s leading volunteer organization to help people develop communication and leadership skills. The Gannett Fleming Toastmasters Club is one of many clubs in Central Pennsylvania that offers this learning and growing opportunity.
